ConnectIndex applies a structured analytical framework to connectivity comparisons that draws on methodologies from consumer technology research and financial analysis. Our comparisons are designed to be educational and neutral, providing travelers with the information needed to make informed decisions rather than directing them toward specific purchasing choices.
Coverage Analysis Methodology
Coverage analysis presents a fundamental methodological challenge: provider-supplied coverage maps are marketing tools that systematically overstate coverage quality, particularly in rural and mountainous areas. ConnectIndex distinguishes between nominal coverage (as represented on provider maps) and realized coverage (actual traveler experience based on field testing and community data).
Our coverage analysis is organized into three tiers: Tier 1 (urban core — city centers and major transportation hubs), Tier 2 (suburban and secondary cities), and Tier 3 (rural and remote). The gap between providers is most pronounced in Tier 3, where network infrastructure investment varies considerably between operators and countries.

Traveler Suitability Intelligence
Suitability analysis requires mapping connectivity options to specific traveler profiles. ConnectIndex identifies five primary traveler archetypes with distinct connectivity requirements: the short-term tourist, the multi-country traveler, the digital nomad, the business traveler, and the group traveler. Each profile has different priorities across the dimensions of cost, convenience, reliability, and coverage breadth.
The short-term tourist (1–7 days, single country) prioritizes simplicity and reasonable cost. EU roaming or a basic eSIM plan covers most needs. The multi-country traveler (1–4 weeks, 3+ countries) benefits most from eSIM aggregator plans with broad European coverage. The digital nomad (1+ months) often uses a hybrid approach combining eSIM for transit with local SIM cards for extended stays.
Device Compatibility Intelligence
Device compatibility is a critical but frequently underestimated factor in connectivity planning. The eSIM ecosystem is not uniformly supported across all devices, and the activation process varies between manufacturers and operating systems.
